Small, but…

On a clear day in Hiroshima, Japan a group of three B-29 bomber airplanes cruised the skies. Although Japanese radar had picked up the formation, they decided to not intercept what seemed to be only a small harmless reconnaissance mission to conserve fuel for their aircraft.
.
It wasn’t until 16 hours later when the United States publicly announced that they had used the first atomic bomb, that the Japanese realized what had happened to them. The city of Hiroshima all but disappeared from the map, all because of a small group of planes, carrying a relatively small bomb, using one of the smallest particles known to man…the atom.
.
We can be easily tricked into believing that just because something or someone is small or without obvious power that nothing great or big will ever come from them. But this is not the way Jesus teaches us to think. He calls us “the salt of the earth”. Salt is still very potent in small doses. It only takes a small amount of salt to ruin my brother’s soft drink when he’s not looking ;-) But seriously, If Jesus teaches us that we are have an impact and make a difference, then we should start doing it.
.
How can you get involved in someone else’s life and start to make it better? You’re not going to solve the world’s entire problem’s in one day, but you can mean the world to someone who is looking for some care and compassion. Remember that we are much like dominoes. Each of us meant to have a small impact on others that ends up making a huge impact on the world.

Re:new Faith

Imagine if all through grade school your teachers kept giving you the same test? We could agree that not much growth or learning would occur. At some point even the dense mind would realize that succeeding was just a matter of rattling off a “traditional” list of answers. That’s why tests through school are all different, testing you in various ways on the same handful of subjects as you progress, hopefully advancing your knowledge.
.
I had a thought today while I was reading and studying in Romans… there is a verse that talks about believing or having faith in your heart that Jesus was raised from the dead. Matthew Henry’s commentary on this particular verse mentions that “Concerning faith: It is with the heart that man believeth, which implies more than an assent of the understanding … It is not believing (not to be reckoned so) if it be not with the heart.”
.
So if I just stick to what I already know and have come to understand on this Christian walk do I really have faith? Am I taking the same tests over and over again? It appears that even the most earnest faith can be converted to a head knowledge, and then isn’t faith at all.
.
I need to be risking. I need to be seeking God’s next big test for my life. I already know He can do that which He’s already done for me. No faith needed there. So, what’s next? May the mystery of the cross never become merely “head knowledge”.

Jar Head Part 2

Men are meant to be dependable rocks. We are constructed to feel the best, when we are a valued foundation or a praised cornerstone. When a man knows that something succeeded because of his groundwork, no other task can be as fulfilling and satisfying.
.
And I think the world needs more men willing to step up. It’s ok to risk and live an adventure. It’s even more ok to receive the positive reinforcement of accolades as you triumph. Don’t shrink back from the next tough jar. Sure, more and more people will be watching, many of them watching for you to fail at your next attempt. Dig in, take a deep breath and let God get all the glory, so you don’t ever have to live up to the hype.
.
But it is so hard to be rock solid all the time, isn’t it? How can we do great things in life, when a man’s heart is anything but dependable? Man was created to only realize this strength when tapped into a source far greater than his, built on a foundation that will be eternally faithful.
.
The Psalmist puts it like this: “I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” – Psalm 16:8
.
My prayer: “You can count on me. Don’t let my strength go to waste. I want You to challenge me to grow and to become the man I am called to be.” -Rei

Jar-Head Part 1

*This post was featured at ThirdOptionMen.org*
.
I’m a jar opener.
.
Recently I’ve noticed that I’ve assumed quite a prestigious position in my household. As a newly married guy, I have become the “go-to man” when it comes to tightly shut lids. It’s a great title to hold. The bragging rights are awesome. The look on small children’s faces is priceless, when they see me forcefully subdue a container open with a loud pop. All the ladies in the vicinity swoon at my masculinity. Men who witness the event walk away with heads hung in shame knowing that they cannot duplicate such a feat of strength.
.
Okay, okay… I’ll stop.
.
But honestly, every guy that has ever opened up that one impossible jar knows exactly what I’m talking about. That scenario, or something like it, is what secretly plays in a man’s mind. Why?
.
We were designed to be jar openers. That’s why.
